A Day with Filmmaker Popo Fan at bóbó books
Friday, 31 July 2026 | bóbó books, Hamburg

In celebration of CSD weekend in Hamburg, Berlin-based Chinese filmmaker and curator Popo Fan joins us for a full day of conversation and cinema — on migration, queerness, desire, and finding a new creative voice far from home.

15:30–17:30 | Artist Talk: Repositioning Identity — Popo Fan on Migrant Filmmaking
(in Chinese)

In 2017, a chance opportunity brought Popo Fan from Beijing to Berlin. Over nine years in Germany, his work has delved deeply into the intersectionality of migration, queer life, and sexuality. Drawing on examples from his own films such as The Drum Tower, Beer! Beer!, and Lerne Deutsch in meiner Küche, Popo will trace his filmmaking journey: how the obstacles of life in a foreign land can be transformed into creative inspiration. He will share details of his creative practice and everyday life, in open exchange with the audience.

19:30–21:30 | Film Screening: Papa Rainbow (dir. Popo Fan, 2016)
(film with English subtitles, post-screening discussion in English)

Six Chinese fathers speak openly about their lesbian, gay, and transgender children — challenging silence, tradition, and their own expectations of fatherhood. A tender and quietly radical companion piece to Fan's acclaimed Mama Rainbow, the documentary asks what family acceptance looks like in contemporary China.

Admission: €9.90 per person per session (free for bóbó members), including one drink.

Feel free to join the session that suits your language and schedule — or stay for the whole day. We look forward to seeing you!
